Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Carter became one of the defining voices of Southern soul music with classics like “Slip Away,” “Patches,” “Too Weak to Fight,” “Back Door Santa,” and the unforgettable “Strokin’.” Blind since birth, he built a remarkable career spanning more than six decades and was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

I had the opportunity to see Clarence Carter perform multiple times during my years at WQLD Cool 104.3 as producer and co-host of Hubcap’s Classic All Request Show. Then in 2012, I had the honor of interviewing him while at legendary country station WLWI 92.3 FM.

A true Southern music icon whose voice and legacy will live on for generations. RIP Clarence Carter.
