In a major shakeup for Montgomery’s local media landscape, Gray Television — parent company of longtime NBC affiliate WSFA 12 — has announced its acquisition of FOX affiliate WCOV-TV from Allen Media Group. The announcement was made just 30 minutes ago and marks a rare consolidation of two major network affiliates under one ownership umbrella in the Montgomery market.
While details are still emerging, this acquisition is poised to significantly shift the competitive dynamics among Montgomery’s broadcast stations. WCOV has been affiliated with FOX since 1986, and its ownership under Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group was notable for being one of the few Black-owned local TV stations in the U.S.
The move gives Gray control over both an NBC and a FOX affiliate in central Alabama, a strategic win in terms of market reach and advertising power. It’s unclear yet what this will mean for WCOV’s current operations, staffing, or local programming.
This move comes days after Roscoe Miller’s Autagaville radio Inc. Had purchased Urban radio station WJWZ 97.9 Jamz from Bluewater Broadcasting.
